Meet Rob
I am a long‑time Bergen County business owner and Rockleigh homeowner. My wife and I chose Rockleigh in 2017 as the place to raise our two children because of its historic, rural character and close‑knit feel. Over the years I have been an active presence at Mayor and Council and Planning Board meetings, repeatedly pointing out inconsistencies and problems in how our ordinances are applied. While both bodies have acknowledged that these issues exist, they have not taken the steps needed to correct them. Fixing problems when they surface is one of the most important duties of any elected official, because consistency and corrective action are what protect both taxpayers and the character of the town. The absence of that kind of leadership is what convinced me to run: Rockleigh needs a mayor who listens, applies the rules the same way for everyone, and respects both residents’ rights and the borough’s historic, rural identity.
For decades, Rockleigh’s zoning system has drifted away from its own rules. Many approvals have been granted without clear reference to the criteria required by New Jersey’s Municipal Land Use Law, and the Borough cannot reliably say, property by property, what was actually built versus what was formally approved. This breakdown makes it hard to enforce the code and exposes every taxpayer to unnecessary legal risk and expense.
As mayor, I will lead a one‑time, fact‑based review of existing development in town so our zoning map and coverage limits reflect what actually exists on the ground. Once we know the real numbers, we can preserve Rockleigh’s character, give the construction and zoning officials clear standards they can enforce, and ensure that every resident is treated under the same rules. This will end “rules for some but not for others,” reduce opportunities for self‑dealing, and sharply limit the kind of arbitrary decisions that have already drawn Rockleigh into costly litigation and could do so again if not fixed.
Priorities / Issues
Maintain Rockleighs Taxes
It’s no secret that Rockleigh enjoys some of the lowest property taxes in the area, and I intend to keep it that way. I will insist on a lean, efficient budget that focuses on core services, avoid unnecessary spending, and aggressively manage the risks created by past decisions so we are not hit with surprise legal bills or capital costs.
Preserve Rockleighs Historic Character
I intend to preserve Rockleigh’s historic, rural character while fixing a zoning system that has become inconsistent and impossible to enforce, so that every resident is treated fairly under clear, modern rules. This problem has been ignored and swept under the rug for decades, and it is time for a mayor who will finally address the problem instead of vacationing with him.
Increase Property Values
Identifying the actual lot coverage on every property and using those facts to reset our zoning will bring the code back in line with how Rockleigh really looks and functions today. This approach will not take anything away from current homeowners; it simply makes the rules fair, consistent, and aligned with the borough’s existing goals. It will let current owners and new buyers make reasonable improvements without needing a variance for almost every project. Fixing the zoning will end Rockleigh’s reputation as a place that is unfair and difficult to build in, attracting more qualified buyers and making every home more desirable and valuable—without changing the look and feel of the borough as it exists today.
Smart Development
One of the biggest changes Rockleigh will face in the coming years is whatever happens to the roughly 50 vacant acres on Piermont Road. I will work closely with Bergen County and state officials to insist that borough residents have a real voice in the process. The goal is simple: if that land is ever developed, it should have the smallest possible impact on traffic, noise, and views while protecting the unique character that makes Rockleigh what it is today.
Open and Transparent Government
I plan to publish plain‑language accurate summaries of agendas, minutes, and ordinances and encourage resident input before major decisions. The focus will be on making it easy to understand how the mayor and council are voting while showing the process for all to see. I plan to make all meetings publicly viewable on YouTube as well as promoting public input and discussion on a residents only facebook group.
Respect For Residents
I’m not a politician, I will treat every homeowner and business as a partner, not a problem to manage—return calls, explain decisions, and keep borough hall focused on solving issues, not creating them. If you have an issue, I will be easy to reach, quick to respond, and seek to have it addressed and resolved in a timely manner.
